• Overview

Endourology is a branch of urology that utilizes minimally invasive procedures performed using specialized instruments and cameras to diagnose and treat urological conditions. These procedures offer an alternative to traditional open surgery, as they can be performed through natural body openings or small incisions. Endourology employs endoscopes and laparoscopes, which are inserted into the urethra or through small incisions in the abdomen to access the urinary tract or male reproductive system. This allows for visualization and treatment without the need for major incisions. Various instruments, including cautery tools, lasers, graspers, and stone retrieval baskets, are used to remove blockages, stones, or scar tissue. Endourology offers numerous benefits, such as reduced bleeding, faster recovery times, decreased pain, and a lower risk of infection compared to open surgery. However, not all patients are suitable candidates for endourological procedures, particularly if there are obstructions or other factors that make the urinary tract inaccessible. In such cases, open surgery may be necessary.

  • Endourology Procedure Types

Endourology encompasses several common procedures performed using minimally invasive techniques. These include cystoscopy, nephroscopy, urethroscopy, and ureteroscopy. In cystoscopy, a cystoscope is inserted through the urethra to the bladder, allowing for diagnostic examination and the removal of obstructions or tissue samples. Nephroscopy involves a small incision to access the renal pelvis and kidneys, particularly useful for treating lower pole kidney stones. Urethroscopy utilizes a flexible scope to assess the urethra and bladder muscles, often addressing issues like incontinence and strictures. Ureteroscopy involves inserting a thin scope through the urethra to the ureter, enabling the use of laser beams or graspers to break up and remove kidney stones. These outpatient procedures offer the advantages of minimal hospital stays and faster recovery times, unless complications necessitate additional care. Endourology continues to provide effective diagnostic and therapeutic options for various urological conditions.

  • UroLift Procedure: A Minimally Invasive Breakthrough for BPH Treatment

The UroLift System offers a straightforward and minimally invasive treatment for men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). This innovative system addresses the need for a less invasive option compared to traditional treatments. The procedure, which can be performed in an outpatient or inpatient setting, involves using the UroLift Delivery Device to insert small permanent implants that lift and hold the enlarged prostate tissue, relieving the obstruction of the urethra. The UroLift System does not require ongoing medication, heating, cutting, or removal of prostate tissue. Patients typically experience immediate symptom relief, rapid recovery, and can return home the same day without a catheter. The system improves the quality of life for patients while offering a positive BPH therapy experience for physicians. The UroLift Implants used in the procedure are MR Conditional, allowing patients to safely undergo magnetic resonance imaging under specific conditions. The UroLift System provides a valuable non-surgical treatment option for men with BPH.
